Have you ever watched this show? If you haven't don't watch it while eating but if you have, you know what I am talking about. I love this show because the ladies are hillarious and they have really good cleaning tips. However, these people they feature on their show have absolutely HORRID houses. How can you even let it get that messy?! This show also explains the germs and bacteria that live in a normal house vs. a messy house. Another reason I like watching this show because it always puts me in the mood for a good scrub down of the house. I will never ever let my house get like that!
With that, I have been trying to do my spring cleaning through out the house.
My first mission: purge purge purge!
I'm a closet packrat, well I guess its beyond the closet. So my Mantra for this is, if I havent used it in the last year, I don't need it. This has been hard, I have trouble parting with even a pen but I know its a must to get this crazy clutter under control. I'm also trying to abide by the rule, everytime something new comes in the house, something has to go. For example, I just bought a new cookie sheet and so I purged an old one. Now I am a firm believer in recycling so anything that I do purge, goes to the Goodwill by my house.
Next mission, scrub scrub scrub!
I am now trying to scrub the floors, walls, appliances, etc. With kids and dogs who bring in every single spec of dirt from outside, to in the house it's just a little hard. Dusting, ugh to keep up I have to do it at least three times a week! I am finding it easier though if I take the time to do the first big scrubing/dusting, it's a lot easier to keep up with.
Last Mission: organize organize organize!
A place for everything and everything in it's place, here is the organization Mantra. I am trying to make sure that everything not only looks less cluttered, but its easier to find. I am always misplacing things so this will definately be a great mission to accomplish.
My absolute favorite spring cleaning tool:
Shark Handheld Steamer
This thing rocks my socks! It takes the elbow work out of scrubbing baseboards, floors, cabinets, and it gives every flat surface a nice shine. I just point it and then wipe it down with a rag, its so very simple!
My absolute favorite spring cleaning and scrubbing products:
Lemon Juice
Baking Powder
Dish Soap
Vinegar
Salt
Mostly natrual ingredients and these can be combined in a spray bottle with water.
So my hope is to complete these missions before the end of May, to ensure a clean summer. Also, a clean home is a happy home!
Here are some featured tips from the How Clean Is Your House webpage:
If you are planning to sell your house, its worth getting professional cleaners in to do your carpets - it can really make a difference and can be cheap.
If you want to stop dust settling on your TV screen try wiping the screen with a used sheet of fabric softener - it'll stop more dust forming on it!
Never leave a stain in the carpet for long - the longer it stays there the more it reacts with the fabric and you'll never get rid of it!
use cotton buds to clean between computer keys - the stuff you get out will disgust you!!!!
wipe essential oils to light bulbs and radiators as it heats it will be like air freshener but no c.f.c gases
If you spill bleach on something- immediately put vinegar on the spill and it will keep it from ruining the fabric. Vinegar stops the action chemical action of the bleach
If moving furniture leaves big dents in the carpet, try leaving a damp sponge over the dent - as the sponge dries, it will draw up the carpet.
to keep feather dusters clean, sprinkle with talcum powder and then brush off
Stop a freezer in the garage becoming rusty by spraying it with furniture polish
Having hacked a finger off attempting to build some shelves I found that bloodstains can be removed from carpet by soaking in cold water, blotting with some kitchen roll and then finishing off with carpet shampoo - the finger got sewn back on...
Here's a good one, if you lose your contact lense on the floor then use your hoover to find it - just cover the end with a sock first!
If you need to get rid of sticky label marks try wiping it with meths.
Spray furniture polish behind the radiator and the heat will spread it round the room
clean tv remote controls with methylated spirits. take the batteries out first
WHEN FURNITURE LEAVES A MARK IN THE CARPET PUT ICE IN THE HOLES
wash clothes at 30 degrees rather than higher, it uses less energy so is eco friendly, is kinder to clothes, and does just as good a job in most cases
If you need to clean wallpaper try using stale bread thats been ever so slightly moistened. It get marks off without having to use soap.
If you're cat's anything like mine you'll find he still can't work out where the litter tray is. I use a mixture of white vinegar and water to blot up any 'accidents' and stop any smells.
My Gran sprinkles her carpet with a mixture of salt and oatmeal before she hoovers it - she says it makes it the carpets fresher
You should hoover your carpet exactly how you mow your lawn - strips will ensure that you don't miss any bits!
